Maine lawmakers have directed the state to launch an independent review of an office that oversees MaineCare following allegations of fraud.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Government Oversight Committee on Friday unanimously approved a risk assessment for the MaineCare Program Integrity Unit.

The review will be conducted by the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability, which is an independent watchdog.

Maine Republicans have called for action by lawmakers after MaineCare payments to the Portland-based Gateway Community Services were suspended due to possible fraud.
