Against the Odds: Maine’s Orchards Pull Off a Top-Quality Apple Harvest

MONMOUTH – Maine’s apple harvest is in full swing, and orchard owners say the quality of this year’s crop is excellent — even if yields are uneven. Growers in central and western Maine report smaller harvests in some areas due to drought and poor pollination, but there are still plenty of apples for pick-your-own visitors and local markets.

Large producers like Cooper Farms in West Paris are picking thousands of bushels daily, while smaller orchards have relied on irrigation to keep trees healthy.
Experts say the bigger concern is next year’s crop, since buds forming now need water to thrive. For now, though, customers can expect crisp, flavorful apples across the state.
