The sister of Republican governor candidate Bobby Charles says she voting for his Democratic opponent, Hannah Pingree.
Anita Charles has written a highly critical opinion piece in the Portland Press Herald, saying his divisive rhetoric forced her to speak out.
She notably criticized his position on education and abortion, saying he would have blocked her from getting healthcare after she was sexually assaulted as a child.
Anita Charles, a teacher by profession, said Bobby has likely not stepped inside a school since age 18, and has been a D.C. lobbyist who spent more than 30 years in Washington.
She indicated her brother lacks compassion and does not treat people from different backgrounds with dignity, based on “race, gender, religion, country of origin or who they love.”
“Unfortunately, Bobby campaigns against groups that include members of our own extended family,” Anita Charles said in her opinion piece.
Bobby Charles issued a response, saying he and his sister went through tough times growing up in a broken family. He defended his campaign to reduce crime, improve public safety and cut taxes.
