A woman from Brewer is recovering after accidentally getting shot while on a bird hunting trip yesterday afternoon.

The Maine Warden Service says that 31-year-old Amber Oaks was hunting with a party of six in the town of Hamlin.

She was being driven on an ATV by 31-year-old Danielle Fernald of Freeport, who allegedly reached to grab a loaded shotgun and bumped the butt against the vehicle’s roll cage, accidentally pulling the trigger and shooting Oaks in the knee.

Oaks was taken to a hospital in Caribou where wardens said she is getting surgery to clean the wound.

Fernald has been charged with shooting from a motor vehicle, with the law encompassing having a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
