On Saturday, July 26, a celebration will be held for the 150th anniversary of the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse. The famous lighthouse, commonly known as Bug Light, was built in 1875 and is now run by the South Portland and Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club. 

The lighthouse has a storied past; it was automated in 1934, decommissioned in 1942, and relighted as a private aid in 2002. The 24-foot tower’s design is based on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates located in Athens, Greece. 

The celebration of the landmark will take place at Bug Light Park and include a host of activities, food, music, and historical remarks. Lighthouse Historian Howie Wright shares stories of the difficulties and dangers of running a lighthouse, and poet John Reinhart hosts a free poetry workshop.
