Cell Phone Fire Sends Firefighters to South Berwick School

Cell Phone Fire Sends Firefighters to South Berwick School

South Berwick Fire Department

A safety scare at Marshwood High School in South Berwick is no longer an issue after a cell phone brought firefighters to the school on Thursday.

The South Berwick Fire chief says a student dropped a cell phone while going to class, with the lithium-ion battery creating smoke while melting the phone case and screen.

The phone was immediately taken outside, where it eventually cooled down.

There were no injuries or damage to the school building, but the fire chief says the incident highlights the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries.

The incident took place during National Fire Prevention Week, which has a focus this year on safe handling of lithium-ion batteries.
