Scarborough (WGME) –  Hundreds gathered in Scarborough, Maine to honor the memory of those lost in the Lewiston mass shooting, and to support those affected by the tragedy.

The event, organized by the Maineiacs Cornhole Family Fund, was a cornhole tournament that brought the community together for a day of friendly competition and shared remembrance. John Maloney, president of the Fund, lost three friends – Joe Walker, Ron Morin, and Peyton Brewer-Ross – in the shooting, some of whom were playing cornhole at the time.

“It’s what the cornhole family is all about,” Maloney said, emphasizing the importance of carrying on the legacy of the victims.

The tournament was held at Scarborough’s Throttle Car Club, with a focus on community spirit and shared passion, according to club president Kevin Gross. There was no specific fundraising goal, but all proceeds will go towards supporting the families impacted by the shooting and keeping the memories of those lost alive.

The Maineiacs Cornhole Family Fund has already made a significant difference, having established college scholarships, donated to the resiliency center, and provided holiday gifts for affected families. Maloney aims to make this an annual event, ensuring the continued support for those impacted by the tragedy.

“People that were lost, that were a part of our family, the Maineiacs Cornhole group, would want us to keep playing,” Maloney said, highlighting the spirit of resilience and the importance of community in the healing process.
