Drought conditions continue to worsen in Maine, with almost 95 percent of the state now considered at least abnormally dry, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor release.

Moderate drought now covers more than 60 percent of the state and is present in nearly all regions of Maine.

A significant portion of coastal Maine is under severe drought, stretching from south of Portland to Bar Harbor.

Almost 930,000 Maine residents are currently in areas of drought, which is a nearly 5 percent increase over last week.

The state had made an early summer drought recovery before July, which turned out to be the 4th-driest July on record.

Conditions are still better than last summer, when a large portion of the state was under extreme drought.

Maine started 2026 with the entire state under moderate or severe drought.
