Steady rainfall in recent weeks is being credited for improving drought conditions in Maine.

The biggest improvement is in southern Maine, where southern York County is the only portion of the state under severe drought.

Last week’s Drought Monitor showed all of York and Cumberland counties under severe drought, as well as much of Androscoggin and southern Oxford counties.

Improvement has been dramatic over the past two weeks with severe drought dropping from 22 percent of the state to just 2 percent.

Large portions of southern and central Maine remain under moderate drought conditions.

More than 38 percent of the state is now under moderate drought, while 32 percent is under the lower designation of abnormally dry.

A growing portion of the state has no drought classification, including most all of Aroostook County in norther Maine and much of Washington County in Downeast Maine.
