A thru-hiker from California died after reaching the summit on Mt. Katahdin during rainy and cold conditions last week.

The director of Baxter State Park said Monday that the victim, tentatively identified as Bert Peter Goris, 64, was found Monday, Sep. 14 lying on the ground on Hunt Trail near York Valley with an apparent leg injury.

The hiker who spotted Goris said he was also having difficulty talking and was unable to move.

The initial hiker and a second person helped carry Goris to the site where a helicopter landed to pick him up.

Goris was airlifted to Millinocket Airport where, the ambulance crew said he had died.

The medical examiner is working to confirm his identity and cause of death.
