The state has launched an investigation into a report that a Maine woman received 250 blank ballots in the mail this week.

The ballots showed up Tuesday evening in an Amazon package shipped to the home of a Newburgh woman.

The incident was first reported by the conservative media outlet the Maine Wire, before Secretary of State Shenna Bellows confirmed it on Wednesday.

Maine Republican Party Chairman Jim Deyermond called for the U.S. Justice Department to lead an investigation into the matter.

It’s not yet clear which state agency will be leading the investigation.
