Owing to rainy, cool weather on Memorial Day in Maine, people are apparently going home earlier this year.

Ordinarily, heavy traffic on the Maine Turnpike begins in the late afternoon as people celebrate the unofficial first day of summer in Maine.

However, this year, drizzle and showers are predicted to continue through the day, with more sustained rainfall at the end of the day and overnight into Tuesday morning.

By 10 a.m., traffic was backed up from the York tolls to the New Hampshire line

By around 10:30, the backup extended to the Kennebunk Travel Plaza.

By 11 a.m., traffic was backed up to Saco, according to a Maine Turnpike Authority email.

According to WGME’s photog in the field, by 11:20 a.m., traffic was backed up to Scarborough.

MTA also reported a multivehicle accident in Wells, adding to the congestion.
