Long Running Pie Contest Draws Big Numbers at Cumberland Fair

Long Running Pie Contest Draws Big Numbers at Cumberland Fair

Pie Contest winners - Cumberland Fair

The Cumberland Fair runs through tomorrow, but a major competition, the Apple Pie contest, is already in the books.

Exhibition Hall at Cumberland Fair Superintendent Carolyn Small says there were a total of 23 pies entered in Thursday’s competition, but one had to be disqualified for a particular infraction.

“The entrant misread…the whole pie has to be your own recipe, your own, and it was a store-bought crust,” said Small.

Small says the contest is especially hard to judge. She says some of the recipes are long held family secrets, which she can relate to.

“My maternal grandmother, pretty much, I actually learned how to cook on a wood stove in Peru Maine,” Small said. “So, foods are emotional as well as tasty.”

All proceeds from the Pie Contest are going to benefit the Cumberland Food Pantry.

Youth

2nd Harrison Loring, Cumberland
3rd Brynlea Loring, Cumberland

There was also a competition for decorated cupcakes, with the winner by Barbara McDonald being a cupcake that looked like an ice cream sundae.

The last day of the Cumberland Fair Saturday will feature final night fireworks, 4-H shows, and lots of activity in the exhibition hall with beautiful quilts and handcrafts.
