The Maine Republican Party office in Augusta was evacuated Thursday when a suspicious envelope containing white powder was received.

Republican Party Chair Jim Deyermond says the headquarters was evacuated when the office manager opened the envelope and found the substance.

Deyermond said no one reported feeling ill.

In a statement, he warned about the dangers of divisive political rhetoric:

“These are crazy times, and we must continue to remain diligent for our own and others’ safety. This will not impact the functions or dedication of the Maine Republican Party to elect Republicans and work for a better tomorrow. It’s frustrating to be interrupted and have potential extreme ill-intent impacting our operations and staff. The rhetoric and violence need to be toned down before more people get hurt. We are thankful no one was harmed today.”

The substance was tested and deemed not harmful, but more testing was set to get underway overnight.
