The Maine Law Enforcement Coalition says that inflammatory political rhetoric and misleading public narratives about immigration enforcement are endangering the public and law enforcement personnel.

The organization says reckless or politically motivated rhetoric by politicians and commentators is jeopardizing safety.

The statement from the coalition follows the warning of an upcoming increase in ICE presence in Maine by elected office holders at the federal, state, and local levels.

There’ve been widespread protests against immigration enforcement in Maine following the killing of a woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.

The Maine Law Enforcement Coalition says recent changes to state law, which limit officers’ interaction with immigration enforcement, are being misrepresented, causing public misunderstanding and undermining confidence in lawful policing.

“Political spin and sensational media coverage distract from facts and place officers and community members at greater risk, the coalition said in a statement, “The Maine Law Enforcement Coalition calls on elected officials, advocacy groups, and media outlets to act responsibly. De-escalation, accuracy, and accountability must take precedence over political gain.”

Although there’s been no confirmation from the Department of Homeland Security, the mayors of Portland and Lewiston, Governor Janet Mill and the Maine Congressional delegation have said in increase in ICE presence in Maine will take place in the next two weeks.

Anti-ICE protests are taking place on a regular basis in Maine, particularly in Portland.
