The White House says the U.S. is reducing the cap on refugees it will take in next year by 95%, with only 50 coming to Maine.

In all, the Trump administration is allowing 7,500 refugees to enter the country.

Most of the refugees coming to our state next year will be Afrikaners, a group of white South Africans.

Ruben Torres with the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition tells our news partners at CBS 13 the president usually consults with Congress before deciding on a number, but that didn’t happen this time.

The American Immigration Council says nearly half of Maine’s refugee population have become U.S. citizens, while the rest are on work or student visas or are undocumented.
