A 54-year-old Medford man has critical injuries, while an 18-year-old Bangor woman has minor injuries, after they were hit by a passing vehicle on I-95 on Monday night.
Maine State Police say the man stopped to assist the woman who had crashed in snowy conditions on the highway in Veazie.
Officers say they were hit and knocked down an embankment by another vehicle that lost control in the snowy conditions.
Police say it appeared the man had tried to shield the woman as they were hit.
They say the man remains in critical condition, while the woman and the driver of the vehicle who hit them, a 19-year-old woman from Old Town, were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
Police say speed is not a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
