A Brunswick man has been charged in the killing of his neighbor.

Police were called to a home on Valerie Avenue on Sep. 1 after a report of gunshots and found 48-year-old James Smith dead.

Smith’s neighbor, 58-year-old Keith Brunelle, was taken into custody for a bail violation and later released after posting bail.

The investigation continued, with the medical examiner ruling the death a homicide and the cause of death a gunshot wound.

Brunelle was taken into custody again in Augusta on Friday and charged with murder and criminal use of explosives.

He’s being held without bail at Cumberland County Jail.
