A New Hampshire man is dead from a crash involving a stopped vehicle and a tractor-trailer on I-95 in Newport late last night.
Maine State Police say they were on their way to assist a stopped car in the travel lane of I-95 after 11:30 pm when the car, a Chevrolet Volt, was rear-ended by a Freightliner tractor-trailer.
Troopers say the driver of the car, 33-year-old Juan Guallpa of Lempster, New Hampshire, died at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital for treatment.
Troopers say it remains unknown why Guallpa’s vehicle was stopped in the travel lane. The crash impact pushed the car into the median.
The tractor-trailer also went into median, where it rolled onto its passenger side and came to rest across both southbound lanes.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were shut down following the crash, and traffic was diverted.
The northbound lanes were reopened at approximately 3:00 a.m. Southbound traffic remained reduced to one lane as crews continued working to remove the tractor-trailer.
Just before 7 am Wednesday, troopers said cleanup and removal efforts were expected to take approximately eight hours.
