A 23-year-old man is dead, and two others have serious injuries from a head-on crash on Route 196 near the Merrymeeting Bridge in Topsham late Saturday night.

Police say they were sent to the scene where emergency crews performed life-saving efforts on the passenger in one of the vehicles, 23-year-old Marcus Steinman of Topsham, who was later pronounced dead after being taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

The driver of a pickup truck, 34-year-old Joseph Lemont of Bowdoin, and 25-year-old Lacey Wiles of Hermon, who was driving a Volvo SUV, were both seriously injured and were taken to Maine Medical Center.

Officers say a preliminary investigation shows one of the vehicles crossed the centerline, which caused the crash

They say a reconstructionist from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with information to contact Officer Lucas Shirland at 207-725-4337.
