Maine man dies after being shot in Portland

PORTLAND (WGME) — Police say a Maine man who was shot in Portland on Wednesday has died.

Police responded to Deering Oaks Park around 6:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

Police say officers found 31-year-old Walter Omal of Portland suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Omal was taken to the Maine Medical Center where he died from his injuries early Thursday morning. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

Investigators are still on scene looking for evidence.

Portland Police say a man died after being shot in Deering Oaks Park in Portland.

Because of the proximity to the incident, police have asked the Department of Public Works to drain the duck pond in Deering Oaks and once that is complete, they will be conducting a search of the pond.

Police say they have several people detained while they investigate. No arrests have been made.

Police say they don’t believe there is any threat to the public.

Police say they will not be releasing any further details at this time.

This is the fifth shooting in Portland since last week.
