Investigators say two people from New York accused of stealing gold in Maine’s midcoast may be linked to a Romanian theft ring.

Police say 49-year-old Maria Rosta and 35-year-old Mircea Lucaci went to purchase an $8,000 piece of gold artwork at a shop in Wiscasset last month.

The pair negotiated a lower price for the work, then allegedly swapped out a stack of $100 bills with a stack of $1 bills with a $100 bill on top when the owner wasn’t looking.

The pair, who could face additional charges, have arrest warrants out for them in several states.
