Petitioners file appeal after Maine transgender athlete question is nixed from November ballot

The group behind a referendum barring transgender students from competing in girls’ sports in Maine is filing an appeal after the measure was struck from the ballot.

Last month, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said the question will not appear on November’s ballot after thousands of signatures were found to be invalid.

The group Protect Girls Sports in Maine argued that Bellows applied technical rules that disenfranchised voters.

The group says it met Wednesday’s deadline to file an appeal and keep the question on the ballot.
