Investigators say a fire in Pittston that left a family of six homeless was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.

The fire broke out around 4 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Stage Road, sending one elderly resident to the hospital to be evaluated for preexisting medical conditions.

No other injuries were reported.

Investigators say the fire started on the deck quickly spread to a mudroom, causing serious damage.

The home was insured.

Officials say the fire was likely caused by smoking materials and reminded the public about the importance of fully extinguishing and discarding cigarettes and other smoking materials.

They said smoking materials should never be left in combustible containers, flowerpots, mulch or other potentially combustible materials.
