A teenager accused of plotting a mass murder in the South Portland High School community will not be detained.

17-year-old Tristan Hamilton of South Portland pleaded not guilty to criminal solicitation for murder, arson and terrorizing.

A request from the state to have Hamilton detained was rejected by a Cumberland County Judge during an initial court appearance Thursday.

The judge added new conditions, including no contact with an unnamed, alleged victim. Hamilton also will also not be allowed within two hundred feet of the high school or at organized school events that are publicized like football games.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the teen entered not guilty pleas in a Cumberland County courtroom Thursday morning.

The judge said that prosecutors have requested a hearing to consider whether Hamilton should be tried as an adult.

The request can’t move forward until a forensic analysis is complete.

The Press Herald reports that the judge set a deadline for Dec. 28.
