Winthrop Home Heavily Damaged in Fire

Winthrop House Fire - Maine Fire Marshal's Office

A home in Winthrop has heavy damage from a fire Monday afternoon.

Officers say Winthrop Police were first to arrive and assisted the homeowner and his three dogs to safely evacuate the residence at 124 Route 41 before firefighters arrived.

They say Winthrop firefighters were assisted by seven other departments – Manchester, Readfield, Augusta, Monmouth, Wayne, Mount Vernon and Vienna fire departments – in bringing the fire under control.

Two Winthrop firefighters were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center, where they were treated and released for heat-related illnesses

Investigators with the state Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire originated in dry mulch adjacent to or underneath a large composite deck front porch. The fire was determined to have been caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.
