York Police Warn Against ‘Gold Bar’ Scam

York Police are warning the public about what they call an “alarming” scam in which criminals convince victims to purchase gold bars and turn them over under false pretenses.

York officers say scammers often impersonate government officials, tech support, or financial institutions and create a sense of urgency or fear to manipulate victims.

They say once gold is handed over, it is extremely difficult—if not impossible—to recover.

York police are advising the public to be extremely cautious of anyone they meet online who tells them to buy or convert savings into gold.

York Police also have other tips for the public:

  • The Federal Reserve, Federal Trade Commission, or any other governmental organization will NEVER contact you to pick up, safeguard, or store your gold.
  • Law enforcement will NEVER ask you to assist in an investigation by purchasing, receiving, or delivering gold on their behalf.
  • No legitimate authority will ever pressure, threaten, or coerce you into making a purchase—especially something as significant as gold.
  • Beware of individuals posing as financial or investment advisors who urge you to buy gold and claim they will “store it safely” for you—this is a scam.

Slow down—scammers rely on panic and urgency.

  • Verify any claims using official contact information—not what the caller or sender provides.
  • Scammers will attempt to isolate victims by telling them not to talk to family members or the police. Don’t fall for this tactic! Talk to a trusted family member, friend, or contact York before taking action.

Never give money, gold, or valuables to someone you don’t personally know and trust.

Anyone approached or who may be a victim is asked to immediately contact the York Police Department at (207) 363-4444 (non-emergency) or dial 911 if you feel threatened.
