So today is the first day of April and as we are all aware, it’s April fools day. The day we have dedicated to playing jokes on one another for no other reason than it’s the first day of April I guess? (Not sure what the history of it is and I am apparently too lazy to just look it up haha)
Now sadly, here on WPOR we aren’t allowed to partake in the tradition of April fools (at least not allowed to prank you, our beloved listeners) Now the reason for that is because many, MANY years back, like in the late 1990’s, a prank was pulled by one of our affiliates, then someone who didn’t take it as the joke it was intended to be sued, and here we are today.
It is a growing trend in America today. Jokes being taken literally and people being “offended” by a joke. Well, actually, in my opinion, these people are pretending to be offended in order to draw attention to themselves and in some way profit from their phony outrage and offense. And it is because of this attitude that we here at WPOR are where we are. It is why people who joke are hesitant to do so. Because people attack others for nothing more than jokes and sadly the financial risk this group of people is posing forces a majority of people who understand jokes, to suffer. Sense of humor is subjective. What I, Adam Rondeau find funny, you may not, and vice versa. That being said, it is illogical, and quite frankly selfish of someone to say “you can’t say that, it offends me”. Hold on, WHAT!? What do you mean I CAN’T say that? Yes I can! I can say something that you don’t like, that offends you, and you have the right to refute me, tell me you don’t agree or you don’t like it, or just don’t laugh! But, the fact that society bows down to these hypersensitive attention seekers is a sad state of affairs we find ourselves in. By allowing someone to say “you can’t say….” we begin a fast descent down a terrible, boring, lackluster slope that coming back from is going to be horrendously challenging.
Since sense of humor is subjective, who is anyone to say what is and isn’t funny? I laugh at some sick, twisted s***! That is what I find to be the funniest. I like mean, dirty, “offensive” humor. Others do as well, and some like family friendly, G rated comedy, which is fine, but how dare anybody feel they can tell me what is okay, or what is funny? If I laugh at what you are disgusted by, it is still funny because I am laughing. You don’t have to laugh, but you also have no right to shame others for their humor or what they find funny. Just walk away, just don’t laugh. It’s okay to not laugh, and it’s okay to let other enjoy their humor without having to tip toe on egg shells because they are afraid of being deemed mean, or racist, or something-a-phobic just because their sense of humor doesn’t match up to yours is unfair and ignorant.
So instead of judging or shaming someone else for their sense of humor or their jokes, be open minded and realize you and your way of thinking isn’t the right way, nor the only way. Life in general is subjective, as is our humor. So just laugh at what is funny, and let others have the same freedom. Happy weekend POR people!
