So today I became aware of something that deeply disturbs me, as I wish it did everyone but apparently there are human beings that don’t see the problem here. We as a species have this “god-complex” about ourselves, we like to put ourselves above all the other animals on the planet and think we have all the answers to natures problems. Why?! Why do we think that way? Who are we to have a hunting season to “thin the numbers”? If the numbers were too thick, than nature would thin them naturally, as it ALWAYS had before we stuck our narcissistic hands in it! That’s what nature does! As Dr. Malcolm from Jurassic Park once said, “nature will find a way”, and it does! So why do we feel as though we have the right to interfere with nature? Why do we not care or have any concern for the way we treat the planet that literally supports life itself!?
There are tons of things I could ramble on about regarding my disgust for the human population, but let us focus in on the particular issue that lit the flame for this angered rant. I am talking about something that is actually around a decade old, but is now just becoming main stream knowledge. The West African Black Rhino has been extinct since approximately 2003, mostly thanks to poaching, as well as through the destruction of their habitats, or some bogus, non-fact based natural medical uses by grinding up their horns into a powder for ingestion!
We as a species have many reasons for hunting, and only one that I can see as valid, and that is for consumption and use of the meat. That is a legit reason to hunt, seeing as how in nature when an animal hunts it is for that purpose. I don’t see lions decorating their den with antelope heads mounted on a wood frame, so why do we? What is the point of trophy hunting, what is the reward? We have technology that animals don’t understand. Technology that allows us to sit half a mile away, looking through a scope mounted on a rifle that fires a projectile across that distance very accurately, making it far to simple to kill. I mean, it’s a deer, or a rhino, or a giraffe. These aren’t species that possess intelligence and awareness equal to us humans. We use tricks to lure animals to a location, hidden by scent masks and camo wear that there is no way an animal could detect us anyway. Then, we pull the trigger and take it out, selfie with its corpse, just to bring home it’s head and mount it above a hearth, and for what? WHO IS IMPRESSED BY THAT!? Oh, you killed a rhino did you? Sitting a quarter mile away, setting traps above any animals comprehension level and taking it out with unnecessary stealth and concealment? Cool! Tell me when you were able to sneak up on one, using nothing but your own stealth to walk through the environment without being detected, then using just your natural weapons (i.e. hands, feet, mouth, etc.) and took it down that way. Tell me about that story and maybe, JUST MAYBE I will be willing to care about your “trophy”.
Until that day comes (which I am sure it won’t, we will surely just continue to deplete the population of other animals and find a way to justify it) if you have the chance to do anything at all to help this cause, do so! Raise awareness, speak up! This sick s*** needs to stop! We only have one home and it’s Earth! If we keep destroying our home, if we keep killing off its wildlife and our own environment, what are we going to have!? We, the human species, are the most devastating, destructive, unaware, brutal force this planet has on it, yet we reproduce at an alarming rate without consideration for the damage that each new life brings to our fragile ecosystem. Make smart choices, 7+ BILLION humans are alive on this planet of finite resources, food, water, air, etc., and we need to think smarter and realize we are not superior to all these other species, we are surely different and more intelligent, but not superior. Internet, rocket ships, cell phones, these don’t make us BETTER than the animal world, just unique in that we can intellectually conceive these ideas, create them, and then implement them to the masses is amazing, there’s no doubt there, but look at the damage we do to our planet for these things? Our consumption of fossil fuels in staggering and will inevitably fizzle out…then what? Our lack of foresight is embarrassing considering how superior we consider ourselves.
Long story short, because I realize I went off topic from our disgusting slaughtering of an entire species, but we must smarten up, stop killing for “sport” or “fun”, it’s pathetic and pointless unless you’ve literally done so on fair grounds (using your bare hands). If you aren’t using it, eating it, than it isn’t impressive or needed and all it will cause is more and more species to be wiped from existence thanks to our own selfish behavior.
