POR Mornings

VERY interesting weight loss study

Have you ever watched shows like the Biggest Loser and thought to yourself, “if they can do it, I should be able to do it too.”  Although that’s true, you might not WANT to.  I found this article from the New York Times VERY interesting:
Apparently, going through the show’s intense regimen of dieting and exercise seriously messes with your body.  Your metabolism slows way down, even years later.

Danny Cahill won Season 8 by dropping from 430 pounds to 191 pounds.  Now he’s back up to 295 pounds. He says, quote, “All my friends were drinking beer and not gaining massive amounts of weight.  The moment I started drinking beer, there goes another 20 pounds.  I said, ‘This is not right.  Something is wrong with my body.'”  Season 5 winner Ali Vincent recently posted about gaining almost all her weight back.  Guess what?  She has now joined WEIGHT WATCHERS too.

Just before I started working here at WPOR, I lost about 40 pounds in a very short amount of time (about 3 months) on a weight loss program that cut almost everything from my diet and put me on a VERY strict diet.  I was basically eating an 800 calorie diet comprised of veggies and protein and that’s it.  I dropped the weight, that’s for sure, but I didn’t work out, (they said not to because of the low caloric intake) and I couldn’t eat anything really.  No dairy, no FRUIT, no bread, nothing but water and coffee, so no wine, (UG!) and absolutely no sugar.  I just didn’t want to live like that anymore.  So, I moved to Maine and found the food HEAVEN that is Portland and gained almost all the weight back.  Not to mention the incredible stress of work and my Mother dying.  It’s no wonder that all the weight came back.

Now I’ve joined Weight Watchers and so far, I’ve lost 8.5 pounds.  It is VERY slow, but considering all the facts, I’m doing okay.  Even if I gain here and there, I’m not stopping.  I’m not going to give up this time.  Weight Watchers truly is more about the weight.  I am more than a number on a scale!  I really DO want to lose this weight for me because, let’s face it, I have some really cute clothes that I’d like to fit in to.  If it’s not next week, I’m okay with that because honestly, the alternative of feeling fat and unhealthy is not appealing to me at all.

If you are overweight, you have to take responsibility for your part, but some factors are working against you.  As long as you are aware of them, that’s a tool to fight back.  If you want to join WW with me, here’s the link:  http://www.weightwatchersmaine.com/   I highly recommend attending the meetings!!  You get live, real people support!  And Mary Elizabeth, my team Leader is amazing.  LOVE her!  The WW app has a “Connect” feature that you can connect with other WW members.  That’s great too.

Also, if you are so inclined, watch Food Matters and Fed Up on Netflix.  Really eye opening.  We are NOT losers.  Biggest or otherwise.  We can do this.

As always, I’m here – sarah@wpor.com
